  • Coming out of the stigma cupboard…

Harriet Dyer makes no bones about the fact that she has Bipolar Disorder, and her jerky often random delivery style takes a while to attune (more…)

  • Germany, France, India, Japan

No, it isn’t a World Cup football group. Far from it – it’s the global reach of June’s programme at the Penwith Film Society, showing at the Newlyn Filmhouse (which is a great favourite of ours for the films they show, the comfortable seats and the bar/restaurant upstairs). The month of June sees the ‘Masterpieces of European Cinema’ season continue with The Innocents (France; 2016) and Fear Eats The Soul (Germany; 1974), but the film that caught my eye is the Indian classic about a woman whose marriage is turned upside down when she is forced by her redundant husband to go out to work, only to find that she is adept at business in a way he cannot match. The Big City is on Monday June 12th; for more information, see www.penwithfilmsociety.co.uk/

  • So retro, it’s cool.

Coming up at the end of the half-term week is a great looking new festival. Headlining with Echo and the Bunnymen and Primal Scream. I tried to find an old pic of myself in full Bunny regalia (more…)

  • Oh no…a clash…

Thursday 11th May provides something of a dilemma for those of us who miss London theatre and who also like vinyl…

    The choices are:

    1. Obsession, streaming live from the Barbican @ The Newlyn Filmhouse. Jude Law everybody!
    2. Throwback Thursday @Blacks in Chapel Street, Penzance: Playing those old things called ‘records’ that you’re probably too young to remember, with a light menu and full bar. A cool and funky vibe set is promised.

Normally, I would choose the one that lets me enjoy a glass or two with the entertainment because I can walk home, but that’s a choice of romance versus proximity (both appealing attributes); the stroll back from Newlyn along the seafront under the stars is always a good opportunity to steal a kiss al fresco, but the trot home from Blacks takes two minutes….and the food at both venues is excellent, so that’s no differentiator.

My mum has a thing for Jude Law. Should that mean anything here?
